It depends on how old your baby is. Newborns should be laid on their backs to help prevent SIDS. When the baby gets a little older and starts to be able to hold his head by himself, then you can place them on their tummy to give them practice at trying to hold themselves up. ONLY do this when you are playing and baby is alert. Never place infant Tummy down when sleeping. You could buy a little velcro-pillow contraption and place baby on one side snuggled tightly between the pillows, angled so that rolling onto his tummy is impossible. This helps prevent bald spots.

Laying a baby on their back greatly reduces the risk of SIDS. But however they will stay asleep is probably fine. I have a four year old niece and an 8 month old niece that are both tummy sleepers and they are fine. My 3 month old son sleeps on his side in bed with me. Just remember that if you choose to lay your baby on it's back that you should rotate the head to avoid a flat spot and give him plenty of tummy time when he is awake.

On their tummies without a pillow! Baby's spit up a lot and can choke on their fluids if they're on their backs, and they can sufficate if their little faces are on a pillow. Remember, many can't hold their heads up. My mom's a nurse and she's always said baby's should be placed on their sides or on their tummies.

You should place baby on their backs until they can hold their own head up. Usually baby will initiate sleeping on their tummies, so until then put them to sleep on their backs.

Doctors advise mother to put babies on their backs while sleeping. Personally, I put my son on his sides on a positioner that has an incline. I felt safer with him sleeping this way because I was afraid of the possibility of him choking if he were on his back. As they grow, they'll begin to turn on their own, so I advise you to make sure that there's nothing around him/her that can suffocate or get wrapped around them.

The latest is that they're best off on their backs. Less likelyhood of suffocation or SIDS. When in doubt, ask your pediatrician.
