Blood plasma is actually straw-coloured. The plasma however contains white blood cells (we will forget about them for now) and red blood cells. As you have guessed by now, these give the blood its red colour. Red blood cells (erythrocytes) change colour due to the state of the haemoglobin it contains inside: when combined with oxygen the resulting haemoglobin is scarlet and when oxygen has been released, the resulting haemoglobin is darker, and appears blue through the blood vessel walls. That is also why arteries are coloured red (oxygenated blood) in medical diagrams and veins (carrying deoxgenated blood) are coloured blue.

Blood is red because of hemoglobin. It differs in shades of red though. When it is oxygenated, it is bright red. On its way back to the lungs, it is a dark red, because it doesn't have much oxygen left in it. The blood is never blue, only the veins.

Blood is not red it is blue, look at your veins, they are a bluish-green right?, but when you bleed and your blood hits the surface of air, it comes in contact with too much oxygen and it turn red. Wierd huh? When you bruise they are a bluish color, because your blood is not red until it comes out of your body

Technically, blood is not red, it's blue. Blood is only red when it absorbs oxygen. If you cut yourself, even on a blue vein returning to the heart, the blood immediately absorbs oxygen from the air, and turns red.
