News reports say Fema may have to rebuild private homes in New Orleans because of hurrican Katrina

The problem should be the responsibility of the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana. They are responsible for their citizens.
What does Fema do when hurricanes hit other cities in the United States? This is not something new. Cities have been flooded all along the Mississippi river for generations. Who takes care of that? I don't think it's the U.S. taxpayers. That would make a good study project for you students out there. Do some research.

The taxpayer has a lot on his/her plate. Some people have to help themselves and move on. This is not a social/welfare government...though many get help for generations. I think you get the point.

Wow! There are a lot of issues here besides rebuilding homes. It could be said that tax payers should have been paying all along to make sure the levee's were in good working order and safe before Katrina ever hit. Were that the case most of those homes in New Orleans would not have flooded to the extent that they did. Although it could also be said that these people should have had flood insurance, that is a very poor area and flood insurance was probably beyond most of their means. What to do? Look at how much we sent to help Tsunami victims, should we do less for our own citizens? If we can spend billions on war 1/2 a world away we should be able to come off enough to help our own people in our own country.

I'd rather our taxes be spent on something like that than a war somewhere in another land or supporting some disctator that we'll later end up fighting against..

FEMA should remain an emergency management organization and rebuilding homes is not a function of emergency management. People paid for insurance and that should be the first recourse. If people did not have insurance or enough insurance that is their responsibility. There is no reason tax money cannot be used for low interest loans for those who need it though. Helping the people in times of need is one of the primary functions of government.

Could you post the link to the article? Tax payers in N.O. or all over the country? I think that FEMA and the insurance companies need to sit down and straighten things out amongst themselves first.

No. The taxpayers are already taxed enough. We don't need to rebuild their homes. Nobody is going to rebuild mine if it is destroyed but me.

No I don't think the taxpayers should be responsible.
Those people knew the risk they were taking, building below sea level and no one forced them to build there. They should have to foot their own bill.

Actually no. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. And either way it gets expensive. Any time the government gets involved you and I lose.
