My understanding, the Chinese hang a string of firecrackers on their doorknob and light them at midnight to bring in the New Year. It is supposed to bring good luck.

Many years ago I lived in Hawaii. This is where I heard of this. At midnight you heard fireworks going off everywhere. It used to be a tradition in Hawaii, more than just the Chinese did this. It was kinda neat, coz I never expected to hear fireworks on New Year's Eve.

Where I'm at now, all I've heard is your supposed to have good luck by eating black eyed peas on New Years Day. Have tried it a few times and didn't work. Don't bother anymore coz I really don't like black eyed peas.

Old Ukrainian tradition - put some money outside on new year's eve, next morning first thing bring it in. If money is the first thing brought into the house in the new year, you will have good luck with money all year.
