The earth will last for a long long time --- millions of years even if we choke ourselves out before that. The earth doesn't care ... it'll recover even if we kill ourselves. Saying we need to save the planet is kind of silly; it'll be fine even after we may be gone..

The most widely accepted answer to this is the Gaia Hypothesis which basically states that the Earth will be around a long time after humans have done their worst to the Earth. It is self-healing and the only thing people are doing is making the Earth a less inhabitable place for us to live. We are only hurting ourselves, not the Earth.
