I don't know the context of this sentence, but perhaps it is aimed at a 16 year old getting his first job to pay for his own
guitar lessons and car insurance. It is a myth that a 16 year old is too young and not responsible enough at that age to hold a job, perhaps a prevalent myth. He must discard the myth and forge ahead anyways.
