I have the traditional mice traps but they steal the food off and they get away without setting off the trap. I cannot put down poison because I have babies and a dog. I put the bait on the top of the silver piece. Please help me I hate mice.

if they are stealing th food and getting away they are baby mice. ... They dont weigh enough to set off the trap. get sticky glue traps. but keep the spring traps out too for mamma and daddy mouse just in case they are there too.

Take a plastic bucket or small metal trash can, bait with a peanut butter cracker in the bottom, lean a piece of wood against it like a ramp. Then once the mouse jumps into the bucket or trash can it can't get back out.
Take bucket outside away from the house and dump the mouse out.
Have used this method for years. And you don't have to deal with the dead bodies.

i find the sticky rat glue sold in tubes very effective, spread on a glossy thick paper leaving the margins clear for easy handling, place where mice are seen frequently, weigh down the corners so that the mice cannot displace the paper, place a tiny bit of mice-tasty bait in the centre of the paper to lure it to it's end .

If you're going to kill them get a cat. If you're going to let them go, hide in a shadowy area of the room they most inhabit. When you see a mouse, let it get close enough & throw a light cloth over it. Then you can pick it up, release it outside & ask it not to visit again. I have done this & it does work.
