they like acidic soil you can ues pine needles around the plants as mulch or mix them into the soil when planting. If you dont want to do that, just buy miracid from the makers of miracle-gro. it is specially for acid - loving plants and shrubs.

acidic soil is what they love. you can sprinkle, or plop on, coffee grounds around the base of any acid loving plant (including tomoatoes,!)
if you don't have acid soil.
