First of all, convince yourself -- if only for a little while -- that if this job doesn't work out, you'll have another opportunity.

Thau should manifest itself in the confidence that you need to display with him. He's a salesman -- which means he can display confidence even though below the surface he may be full of anxieties. He expects to hire somebody just like himself.

Don't show that you are nervous. Breath deeply -- and not obviously -- throughout the meal. Remember he expects you to talk, so come there with things to say. You should brush up on the company, the industry it is in, the product line and the products of its competitors. The trick is to ask him questions that will demonstrate you are keeping up with the needs of the business. You shouldn't make too many statements of fact. The sales director might take issue with them and he knows more about this stuff than you do.

Be prepared for what's-your-strengths/weaknesses-type questions. Your weakness could be that you can get impatient with yourself when things are not moving quickly enough for you. But you have learned to use such occasions to examine things you could have done or will do to avoid such problems in the future. Strengths might include your ability to deal with setbacks. Give examples. There are a lot of salesmen out there who ended up going to the movies rather than dealing with a difficult sales call. You should tell him you hate rejection but you don't let that bother you.

Don't expect to eat much. This isn't that sort of lunch. Order something small, easy to eat, and leave food on your plate. Don't talk with your mouth full. Napkin in the lap. Hold your silverware properly, etc.

Look at him directly. Don't shift your eyes while you're talking. Appear relaxed. Demonstrate a sense of humor, but don't laugh too loudly at his humorous comments -- but laugh. Ask him a little bit about himself.

Then the last thing you do is to try to close. Find a way to ask him if you got the job. If he's not going there, ask him if you could call him tomorrow to check in with him and to provide him with any information he may need to make his decision. You need to demonstrate what a salesman has to do in order to win business.
