This is an excellent question.
I am what most people consider to be a "liberal".
I must say that I fret more over Torture of terrorists than beheading of americans.
Now before you completely melt down and turn up the rhetoric consider the following.
Torture - We are in control of this act that is clearly against american ideals, arguably against the Geneva convention and clearly aginst all civilized and democratic/american views if right versus wrong. In fact, we degrade our country and our citizens when we torture let alone create additional hatred and animosity against our people for generations to come. We allow and encourage torture of maericans when we torture others. If we want to torture lets change our laws to allow this, yes it is clearly against our own laws. And mandate that torture be approved by the courts, a judge, who would issue a writ of torture comforming with our laws, a court order to torture.
Beheading - we are not doing this to americans. We are not in control. I fret over this but fret less than torture because we can not control this so we can not quite fret over beheading as much as the torture we have control over. Both are horrible.

What I have seen, it appears they are more worried about the percieved "Torture" of the jihadi terrorists then the beheading of innocent Americans, who were there to help rebuild the country.
I have commented to most of them to look into what "Torture" really is by reading the stories of what happened to our service men who were captured by the Japanese, Koreans and Vietnamese, but they refuse to do it, since they believe the Liberal Media that we are "Torturing" our prisoners. They are even making up lies about what our service men are doing. Without providing legitimate proof.
Edit: And they do seem to be up in arms about the Patriot Act. I feel as long as you have nothing to hide then it really doesn't matter. I also don't talk on the phone much except at work. Or to my parents. I realize they are paranoid that the US government will start acting like the Russians used too and just pull ordinary citizens off the streets. I don't see that ever happening and if that was Bush's intention why don't we see that in the news?

They fret more about losing certain rights and they fret more about conservative issues. I will blame them when we are attacked again. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. They will be the first ones to cry about it, yet it will be because of their political correctness, their ignorance and their forgetfullness of that horrible day September 11, 2001.

I'm a conservative and completely unable to answer this question. But I would like to say that if even a small portion of liberal would have to stop and think about this question for more than 2.15 seconds, we are worse off than I ever imagined.

About possibly giving up a few rights to prevent a terrorist attack.
