Well, being an American I have to say there was music before there was a "United States", or even a colony for that matter.
Now if you mean Rock, yeah we created it. That should not detract from the Beatles taking it, polishing it up, and kicking our bum (as you guys say) with it. ;)
But, you know, it took a whole group of Brits to keep up with Elvis....

African american people invented the blues, and rock music is all about the blues. White teens started to like black music in the 50s, so they played it. But it all started in the Delta. Of course, there would be no modern rock music without the British: Beatles, Stones, The Who, the Hollies, and so on. I think the capital rock milestones are the African Americans and the British. Not much of it was a WASP contribution, but then there are some exceptions.

There are, however, distinct musical venues that originated here. Blues and Jazz are all american. It can be argued that modern Rock and Roll originated from the blues.
