that was a feel good moment , wasn't it? seeing these 2 football legends, true gentlemen of the sport, affectionately congratulating and comforting each other. what struck me about this scene was that both players had a lot riding on that game: figo was retiring from the internationals, zizou was taking one last shot at glory, both their teams were dreaming big, and when portugal lost, figo really took a big blow while with france’ s win, zz moved a step closer to his goal of a second championship. such contrasting results yet for a few minutes there, these 2 set aside their personal achievements/disappointments to celebrate that one common bond they had, their friendship. for me, this was what made this moment pretty special.

The entire game was ALMOST worth this pic. Two GREAT sides, with two SPECTACULAR leaders! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Luis Figo and Zidane play on the same feild.. even if on opposing sides... it was almost poetic! My heart was with PORTUGAL, and it was a good old game of FOOTBALL, France, taking the one chance they were afforded, and Zidane banging in that penalty. Both defences were great, but, in the end, there had to be only one winner. I'm sad Luis Figo couldn't play his last game on the greatest stage known to football - The World Cup Finals, but, my only consolation is that PORTUGAL did good... and to take their place will be Les Blues... what Figo couldn't have, Zizou will enjoy!
Luis FIGO (POR)
"I think that football is full of ups and downs. We did everything we could to get to the Final, but unfortunately we didn't achieve our aim. We have to be very proud of what we have done up to now and we can leave here with our heads held high. That's how football is..."

Well, it didn't exactly happen as I hoped it would, but that's the link to my blog above. The pic is there too! You should check it out, we have the same sentiments!

That was an extremely touching display of sportsmanship and of friendship and respect from two great captains and men. Always good to see that when the whistle blows to end the game that mate ship for each other prevails. That's exactly how it should be. It was sad to lose them both from the sport in the same year. But we have fabulous memories.
