Although I don't support the whole "television is harmful" thing, there are many things you could say.

By watching television all day children are missing out on physical activities. Children can be persuaded by the commercials that make smoking, drinking, and drugs seem glamorous. Also commercial endorsing the importance of being thin and beautiful could possible destroy their self esteem, making them lose their individuality. Also shows that shows (for example Reba, you might want to check this, I'm only picking it because its the first thing i can think of) that show teen pregnancy in a humorous way may send the wrong message. Your mother isn't always going to be there to help out. Children seeing this may think that being with child at such a young age is normal.

It is important that everything around children influences how they think, and how they act. In the end it is the parents responsibility to filter the programming their children should watch. It's not right to put all the blame on television.

go onto www.mediaknowall.com and look up hyperdermic syringe theory and culmination theory. Hypodermic syringe theory says that beliefs and ideas are injected into the viewer. Whilst the culmination theory says that extended viewing of violent texts reduces the shock of seeign violence. There are oyher theories which should be helpful. However, it is worth noting that it has not been scientifically proven that t.v. is harmful for children.

Television isn't harmful for children unless their parents are allowing them to sit in front of it all day and allow them to watch inappropriate programs.

I did something like this whilst at uni

Try the James Bulger case, where 2 boys killed James and left him on a railway track (Liverpool)
It was said that the 2 boys were influnced by a film they watched (Child's Play).

Good luck with it

You know what's really annoying? Watching Notre Dame on NBC with my 4 year old son, and during the game they show a graphic for a CSI Miami-type show with some girl getting raped or someone shooting people. WTF? This stuff has gone too far, I cant even watch a football game anymore.
