Carbon has 4 valence electrons. It almost aways forms 4 bonds (graphite is an exception), so it's tetravalent.

Mono = 1
Di = 2
Tri = 3
Tetra = 4

Carbon is almost always tetravalent. Almost all of organic chemistry is about the chemical reactions that occur as aresult of this. Start with methane: CH4. The four hydrogens bind to carbon through the four valence electrons.
