You'll have to ask your ISP.

Most consumer-grade DSL systems use PPPoE and DHCP.

Most consumer-grade cable modem systems use DHCP without PPPoE.

Business grade DSL and cable modem systems usually use static IP.

PPTP is a type of VPN mainly used by Microsoft. Ditto for L2TP.

Some of that stuff you mentioned are not internet connections. Internet Connections in Australia: ADSL and ADSL2 using your existing telephone line. Mobil Broadband using the Mobil telephone network. Satellite Wimax, using a fixed antenna on your roof. I do not mention WIFI because WIFI is NOT an internet connection. The Wifi router still needs to be connected to the internet by one of the above. When you connect to the net by one of the above option's it is best to use the DHCP from your internet service provider. Static IP's cause problems. You have to find out which options are available in your area.
