After becoming very cynical with life, one could build up a "comfortably numb" existence as a "protection" against being hurt and having to feel pain in life. Usually this occurs after many disappointing events in life, losses of love or traumatic experiences that have never been worked through. This is also a phrase used by heroin addicts; but the premise is the same, cynicism with life, not wanting to feel the pain.

Comfortably numb is the expression for a state you can reach where you just exist, you have escaped and have no thoughts of your life, worries and all other things, you are just alive and oblivious to everything but the basics like breathing and the senses.
It can be hard for non-users to understand the attraction of drugs - particularly heroin - but a major reason why any individual may feel drawn to use heroin again after an initial experience is that it produces such a powerful sense of security and tranquillity. It produces a state of mind where all cares and worries seem far removed. Nothing matters. Perhaps it’s like being in the womb.
The best description this writer has ever found is:
“But with heroin, ahhh. You can just sit in a sewer all day and be soooo happy and feel soooo good”
(“Junk” - Melvin Burgess)
Of course, these pleasant sensations have nothing to do with reality. No matter how good a user may feel, the reality is the sewer - or whatever other situation exists - and this is usually quite unpleasant - hence the need to escape from it.
Hope this helps you understand.

Are you referring to the Pink Floyd song Comfortably Numb? If so, Pink Floyd was in an era of a lot of heavy drugs and they were referring to be comfortably numb by doing drugs and hanging out....you are so comfortable that you are numb and nothing else around matters!

In the song 'Comfortably Numb' from the Pink Floyd film The Wall the star - played by Bob Geldof - took drugs to blot out his memories of his Dad being killed in the war. He felt comfortable when the drugs stopped him from thinking or having feelings. hence 'comfortably numb'

What is it? The state of mind where nothing bothers you.
Why? Each person has their own level of stress and sometimes you feel or need that you want to put life on hold for a while.
How? meditation, drink, drugs, self harm, exhaustion, my personal one when Ive finished work is all the above whilst singing my head off and dancing round the house like a woman possessed.
Self harm cos i know ill have a headache in the morning.

One would feel comfortly numb using any form of drug or avoidance tactic to not deal with an emotion or situation at hand. This is a form of self abuse to avert from personal responsiblity. It is a chioce to make a choice with no personal commitment to the self or situation at hand. Zero integerity for self. A Very slow form of suicide.

Get strung out shooting heroin or some other drug. Many people die trying to achieve this state. It is one step away from death.
