First, France is trying to be independent of U.S. influence which is everywhere. However, they are also adamantly capitalist but with a different view of what a non-capitalist is. So they trade with countries that the U.S. has listed as harboring terrorists or having human rights abuses and such. (The Shah in Iran was a U.S/British ally, the Ayatollah was exiled. He went to France and gained notoriety before the revolution. He's probably the most famous example of France sticking it to the U.S. in a concrete way.)

Second, France is more concerned about Germany and Britain than the U.S. in general. They won't run directly counter to these two powerhouses of Europe, but they'll try to undermine them.

Third, for some reason France is trying to be rural. Agrarian. Full of farmers in a pristine pastoral setting. If foreign policy doesn't prevent them from doing this, it's okay. So they're adamantly against genetically modified crops but not too concerned about ICBMs.

Fourth, De Gaulle is the reason U.S. currency isn't backed by gold. He wanted to have a set exchange of gold to dollars, the U.S. didn't have enough gold, now the dollar backs the dollar and hilarity ensues. I say he was just being too clever for his own good.

I think France and the US actually cooperate and get along pretty well on most issues. The whole France/US hatred thing is more for the media to exploit and comedians to make jokes and then of course our barking dogs want to make harsh statements about the French which the media loves to carry and probably sends to France. The French has always wanted to remain independent of the US and take pride in disagreeing with us, publicly. It helps them in their foreign policy if they are seen as an independent Western country. We stereotype the French as rude but we are also rude. We have stereotypes of Americans and many Europeans believe them, mostly because they are exported to them via the world news networks. The American press is always critical of the US in everything and it gives people a false read on us. The French have been a good ally to the US and have many interests with the US. Just becaue they disagree with us does not mean that they do not support many of the same goals that we do. The French/US hatred thing is unfortunate but is a good example of how the US news organization exploit issues and they do hurt us in the long run.

France- Hate the US ever since the US saved their butts in WWII... if US even invades, France will defend itself with a brilliant military stratgy.... surrender, and then form and undreground resistance movement.

US- France?...hmm.... you mean Freedome Fries and Freedom Toast... there is no France.
