I think the term 'metro-sexual' is kind of a modern day definition of 'contemporary dandy' ... Heterosexual guys who spend more time in the bathroom then most girls do, guys who have manicures and pedicures and are always dressed fashionable no matter where they are.. A great example of such a guy would be David Beckham.
A contemporary gentleman would be a guy who will take you on a picnic or spend the day with you at the beach and choose to be with you rather than his friends even though there's a football match on he was dying to see.

I would classify a contemporary dandy as a person who takes to the material and decadent things in life, such as high culture (art openings, poetry readings, operas, etc.) as the "be all and end all" of the world. A contemporary dandy would imagine himself as the wittiest person on the earth, even though 99% of the population would not find his spoutings funny. It's also significant to point out that sexuality does not factor into the definition, as the classic understanding of a dandy has been understood.
A contemporary Gentleman I think transcends class and economic status, which is definitely a departure from the classic definition. Today's gentleman has good manners, is well-spoken and considerate and respectful of others. He would tend to be charismatic and able to solve problems by using reason and not relying on visceral reaction. I have met some men who do not come from a privileged background who exhibit the traits of a gentleman.

The same way it always was defined.
Dandy is somebody dressed very well. But the word carry a shade of something superficial that lacks any depth, something idle.. Dandy likes to show himself off. (Remember that cute song from Shirley Temple's Dimples? "He was a dandy, he was a dandy, he was a dandy and she was a bell...)
Being a gentleman is not a matter of clothing, even though as a rule gentleman knows how to look elegant. But it is not the most important thing. Gentleman does not like or need to show himself off. He feels and demonstrate respect towards other people, especially ladies, and has good manners. He will protect lady's honor and will not participate or contribute to gossips because they can destroy a person. As a rule, our gentleman is a very well educated person, formally or self-educated.
Hopefully, I answered your question.
