Before Celine Dion became famous in America she used to sing all her songs in French. All of her "American" songs are available in the French language. It may be easier for you because you may already know the lyrics in English.

I would use older ones because they're slower and have less slang (but still have some). Jacques Brel (you have to hear his song "Ne Me Quitte Pas"), Julien Clerc, Gerard Lenorman, Babara, Charles Aznavour. Of course, the classic Madame Edith Piaf (you must know "La Vie En Rose" and "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien"), but lots of slang with Piaf, as well as George Brassens (still well worth listening to).
A good large Tower Records store clerk or Virgin might help you. If you take a trip to NYC, all the world lives there... But you can even check out the website and ask questions from those stores. If I remember more, I'll come back and add them.

My all time favorite French singer is the late great Edith Piaf and her infamous song "No Regrets" (Non Je Regrette Rien), and also her friend Charles Aznavour.
