The Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991. In its final state, the Soviet Union consisted of the following republics:

-Russian SFSR
-Ukrainian SSR
-Byelorussian SSR
-Uzbek SSR
-Kazakh SSR
-Georgian SSR
-Azerbaijan SSR
-Lithuanian SSR
-Moldavian SSR
-Latvian SSR
-Kyrgyz SSR
-Tajik SSR
-Armenian SSR
-Turkmen SSR
-Estonian SSR

The successor states are a collection of 15 countries commonly dubbed, 'the former Soviet Union'.

Eleven of these states are aligned through a loose confederation known as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Turkmenistan, originally a full member of the CIS, is now an associate member.

Current members:
-Russia (1991)
-Belarus (1991)
-Ukraine (1991)
-Moldova (1991)
-Kazakhstan (1991)
-Azerbaijan (1991)
-Armenia (1991)
-Kyrgyzstan (1991)
-Uzbekistan (1991)
-Tajikistan (1991)
-Georgia (1993; in Feb 2006, withdrew from the Council of Defense Ministers)

Former members/Associate members:
-Turkmenistan (1991; withdrew 2005, associate member since then)

The three Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) did not join this Commonwealth; instead, they joined both the European Union and the NATO alliance in 2004.

Russia and Belarus also belong to the Union of Russia and Belarus.
