First of all are you sure that your motherboard supports core 2 duo CPUs?
As far as I know (the list of supported chipsets may have grown since I last checked), the Core 2 duo will only run on an Intel p965 or p975 chipsets. The Intel p965 chipset should work straight out of the box and the Intel p975 chipset will normally require a BIOS upgrade.

The Intel p965 chipset was created with the core 2 duo in mind, the Intel p975 chipset was created before the core 2 duo was available but will work after the latest BIOS has been applied.

jhol is right, you have to make sure that your motherboard supports a Core 2 Duo processor. Usually if it supports Core Duo processors, a BIOS update will enable support for Core 2 Duo processors but that does not apply in all cases. So yeah, I agree with him that chances are your motherboard doesn't support Core 2 Duo processors but it may support dual core Pentium D processors but again, that's something you'll have to check.

Well a common problem here i might add, its either the CPU is not working, it has been damaged, i.e missing pins or bent pins, if not it is not compatible with the motherboard, or the frequencies for the CPU are wrong because they were originally implimented for the previous CPU check the motherboard manual and the CPU manual about frequency and CPU core bus speeds for different CPU's

i do no longer understand relating to the Intel proc's yet, maybe, the Core2Duo you choose could have an o.e.m and a boxed version (like some AMD). double examine it first. If it helps the OEM version, it could no longer inevitably that it helps the field version. yet whilst it helps the boxed version, it helps the two. additionally examine the CPU revision. return the old CPU to make certain if mobo nevertheless works.

generally a mobo that runs a pentium 4 cpu will not be compatible with a dual core cpu, you have to get a mobo made for dual core cpu
