D'oh! is officially a word in one of the dictionary (I think Webster's).......it's defined as an annoyed grunt, when someone does something stupid or realized their mistake. The word was made famous by Homer Simpson of the tv show The Simpsons. The original script called the actor playing Homer, Dan Castellaneta, to insert a expression in the lines for the show. I think he made that up along the way and it stuck.

The best explanation I know of, is that the doh word is a substitute for the tutting sound in English, which in some cultures can be mistaken for something else. Doh is better, especially when you tut tut in some South American countries and they think you want sex when what you wanted was the fried squid.

The doh sound comes originally from the London and SE area and was in popular use until the late 1950s. It was often used more as Dowh - an exclamation as though saying NO with a mouthful of bread.

In the Simpsons scripts, 'D'oh!' is written as [ANNOYED GRUNT]

Dan Castanaletta developed the now legendary phrase by imitating Laurel and Hardy 'Dooooooooh!' when making Homer express annoyance. The producers thought it would be better if it was a short exclaimation, therefore 'Doh!' was born.

It is an exclamation and they took the idea from an actor who used to appear in Laurel and Hardy films. The man was called James Finlayson and he used to exclaim "Doh!" in exasperation at the lunacy of Stan & Olly. He would then usually look straight at the camera in order to gain the sympathy and understanding of the viewing audience. Check him out on some DVD of Laurel and Hardy. A great episode he appeared in is "Laughing Gravy" but he pretty much a regular. So there you go.

Just like you have choosen to be an atheist, other choose to "be saved" by accepting the word of Christ and altering their lives to reflect this choice. "Being saved" is not a once and done choice, it is a lifestyle that you choose to accept and follow through on each day. If someone has "been saved", but then continues to sin without regret or remorse, either they didn't understand the concept in the beginning or they have decided that lifestyle isn't for them... or maybe they are trying, but their battle with Satan is harder then it is for others. I can't say that I've "been saved" at one particular moment in my life... instead I have chosen the Christian lifestyle and focus on that each day by making decisions that reflect my choice. The only thing that has changed in my life is how I feel about myself and others and how I choose to live so that I can spread the good news of Christ to other people. It has become a priority for me, rather than being materialistic or judgemental. I feel like a better person, because I know I am making better choices and helping others along the way. I don't have a "get out of Hell free card." Nobody does... that is because like I said above "being saved" isn't a once and done moment, its a lifestyle change that continues every day. The hardest task as a Christian is that you can't judge other people. I do not know what path other people have choosen and where on that path they might be... and how difficult that path is for them to follow. All I can do is work on my goals and encourage others to at least learn about my God and his wonderful opportunity.

When Homer Simpson says "Doh!" in The Simpsons, he means "Oh no!". It's just his way of saying it.

Tell your friend that.

Hi.
I don't know about the Simpson but i use it to say.....it's better if i give you some examples:

a man has his glasses on his head and can't find it.
man: where are my glasses?
boy: they are on your head!
man: of course!
Doh!!!

I would say it's an exclamation for something obvious. This is my theory anyway.
