I learned this from a BBC radio programme yesterday - it's a TITTLE.

I dont think it is seperate to the letter.

i is the shape of the character it is not a parenthesis or definition like the germans have with the omlat with 2 dots over o's and stuff.

I once crossed an 'i' and dotted one of my 't's in a letter I was writing. I went to bed soon thereafter.
