I am a 19 year old 1st. Year student of B.Com. (Hons.) in Accounting & Finance under Calcutta University. I have excellent extra-curriculars and I am also doing a GNIIT course in Management Information Systems (MIS) from NIIT, Camac Street. Along with that I recently acquired a MCP certification. I am also learning French. I plan to do Oracle's E-Business Suite and SAP in future along with a MBA in Finance. I would like to know whether I am on the right track, in respect of career planning?

I would like to go into Functional or Consultancy job roles.

Thanks in advance,
Luvsam

What ever skills you obtain in school are great. But keep in mind, everyone else coming out of school will have a lot of the same skills you have (on paper at least). I would recommend you get a job or internship.

When I hire people, I look more for experience then a college degree.

Someone with a college degree will not know the job better than someone with experience.

Good luck!

Why do you not go along to Learn Direct - they will open a whole field of opportunities for you. I say this because you do not say what your specialized field is. Also as you have children how about teachers support assistant - then you can have the holidays free if that needs to be the case. I took on a whole new career in my thirties doing Home Help full time - really enjoyed this work and moved up the ladder in no time. Just an option at this stage, whatever decission you make I hope it works out for you and yours. One last bit of advice - stay away from scams I dont expect I need to tell you that they are not all what they seem.

Hi,

My suggestion to you would be to make up your mind as to what you want to do:

1. Do you see yourself as a technology professional - software or implementation professional?

2. Would you like to be a functional specialist, business analyst?

If you want to be No. 1 you will face stiff competition from engineers (BEs). If you want to be no. 2, you will face competition from MBAs.

Based on the above, you have two options:

1. Get yourself a job on any of the above mentioned fields. Work for a couple of years and then do your masters. Either an MBA or a functional specialist degree from SAP or Oracle.

2. Do your masters as soon as your done with your Bachelors degree. End of the day, post-grads are paid better than grads in India (or anywhere else for that matter). You can do your MBA in Systems and Finance if you want to be a functional consultant, or get a technical post-grad.

Its great that you are learning so much. But channelizing it will pay off better in the long-run. Remember, no matter how much you study or how good your grades are - its how you perform in that interview and your experience that will matter.

Hope this helps.

Sounds good. Focus on SAP or CFO if you want to make a six figure income. My only worry is that, and maybe I missed it. Where are you getting experience? You need to get your foot in somewhere even if it's picking up trash. Only becasue if someone Graduates with the same qualifications even from a top notch school. and you both interview for a Job. and that individual worked at Taco Bell, while you worked and Donaldson & McCoy Accounting firm. What looks better. Plus you can stretch out your responsibilites during the interview and on your resume.
