My son likes to dance along with cd's and wants a mike and stand for Christmas - toy ones are rubbish but I don't want to spend a lot as he'll have lost interest by New Year. Anyone know where I can get one? Argos sell them but not with stands. No stupid answers please

How much is "a lot"? If you're talking about a real microphone and a boom stand then www.stringdirect.co.uk have a peavey mic and stand package for £44.95. Then again, this is not a toy and should really be being used by a musician. To be honest, if he likes to dance and sing along with CDs and he's got enough imagination to believe he's a pop star, he's got enough imagination to accept a home made mic and stand that you put together from toilet rolls and other bits and pieces.

I'd recommend getting back to basics with this and rather than relying on someone else to provide an expensive, real piece of musical equipment, make a toy for your child. When I was a kid (not very long ago, I'm only 29) my sisters made me a car out of a cardboard box, it gave me more pleasure and enjoyment than all the bought presents did before.

Try one of the auction sites or just type in mic and stand into your search engine.

your best bet is to go to a music shop that sells these things or better go onto eBay as you can find lots of things on there
