If you're trying to go on the cheap, I'd say check resale shops, like Goodwill or Oxfam, or flea markets and yard sales, ebay might be a possibility as well.

If you're in the US, yeah, I'd say it'd be cheaper, like if you're coming over on a vacation or something, but, if you're having them imported, I don't know that what you save would come out to be worthwhile by the time you paid shipping, etc. Especially on something heavy like dishes.

I would suggest transferring you money by bank to bank electronic transfer from UK to US. The reason I say this, is that as you are transferring a reasonable value you will be able to book a FOREX deal for that specific payment. Generally you can get a better rate than standard exchange rate of the day doing this. I'll call you bank and ask about this.
