And I have been together for 6 years. She is 23 and we have been trying for a baby now for 10 months.
We both smoke and she likes the odd glass of wine. We both love junk food and I heard all of these factors add to the reason as to why we cant have a baby YET.
How long does it take the average person to fall pregnant?

WE ARE NOT STUPID - SHE WOULD NEVER DRINK OR SMOKE WHILE SHE WAS PREGNANT.

WE WOULD NOT LET ANY ONE ELSE DRINK OR SMOKE AROUND THE BABY

anything up to a year is considered normal...however, yes, smoking, drinking, and having a bad diet CAN inhibit both your and her potential of becoming a parent.
I suggest you both stop smoking and drinking and begin a more healthy diet and exercise regime.

Good luck.

Billy That's sort of an odd question "How long does it takes the average person to fall pregnant?" There is no such time chart that says when the average person will become pregnant. Some women have become pregnant having sex for the first time. Some become pregnant as a result of not using birth control, then others swear they used protection and still end up pregnant. There are ovulation kits that are sold in stores to help couples predict when the woman is ovulation to give "trying" couples a better shot at conceiving. But I don't want to give that advice to you Billy. She likes to smoke and drink and you admitted to smoking as well and you both eat junk food. It's not a good idea to become pregnant and then stop smoking, drinking and eating unhealthy. It's best to put these things into practice before you conceive a child. If you don't feel ready to give up these things before you conceive then what makes you think it's going to be so easy to do once you guys do conceive? She's still young and the two of you have time to have children in the future after you settled down and decided to live "healthier" lives. I would suggest using this time to get to know one another better and maybe getting married. It would be an awful thing for you two to bring a child into the world without making some healthy changes in your lifestyles and relationships. And it's always a good idea to bring a baby into a married committed relationship, because babies are nothing casual.

The health of the mother even before she falls pregnant can affect the unborn child's development.

If you are trying to conceive it is best for both of you to go to the doctors and gain the appropriate advice... the doctor will most likely advice prenatal vitamins for the mother, as vitamins such as folic acid are important to the child's development and are not produced by the mother naturally...

and yes they will advice both of you to stop smoking not just so you can conceive but also for you unborn child's sake...

The effects of smoking will stay in both of your bodies for months after you have quit... so even if you both quit cold turkey on the day you discover that your girlfriend is pregnant.. the effects of those last cigarrettes can still be harmful to your baby.. as well as this it will be a few weeks into the pregnancy before either of you will know the baby is there. This is a very delicate stage of development for the child and by then the smoking may already have had an affect on your baby.

Sorry to go off on one about smoking but it is an important issue. Also as other have said smoking does cause impotence.
The odd glass of wine shouldn't be a problem however.

Overall I think the average is roughly the year round for couples trying to conceive.

When the child is conceived it will need vital nutrients that it will take from the mother. The mother needs to build up a healthy diet so that she has enough of these nutrients for her baby and herself... if she doesn't the baby will still take all it can get and leave the mother with very little.. making her feel weaker and less healthy.

I would advice you both to do a lot of research on the kinds of things you both should be eating even before you conceive as this will lead to a happier and healthier pregnancy... and thus a happy baby in the end.

Good luck to you both :)

on average for a person in there 20s it take between 4 months and 1 year to conceive, but you also have to have sex when she is ovulation, and you might not be (i had this problem) what would be the best thing to do is to buy an ovulating kit they're quite expensive but there worth it, i got pregnant a soon as i started doing ovulation tests.my partner smokes and drinks, he doesn't eat anything healthy ans we conceived withing 2 months so i don't think that is the reason.

it's a load or rubbish that after you come off the pill it can take you 2 years, i conceive within 2 months twice after coming off the pill!

Everyone is different. Smoking does decrease both male and female fertility both in the short and long term so If you gave up smoking that would help.
Also, girls are only fertile for about 5 days per month (not necessarily the days as she has her period). You should go to the doctor and find out when your girlfriend is ovulating and make sure you have plenty of sex around that time.

This is honestly not something you can put a time on. My brother and his wife have been trying for two years. Some woman get pregnant while on the pill some about two months after getting off. The best thing for her to do is to go and have a pre pregnancy check-up. This will allow the doctor to check her out and tell her everything she needs to be doing BEFORE she gets pregnant. Also I would have her start taking a pre-natal vitamin now. Also start reading some books on fertility.

Usually doctors dont treat it as a problem if youve been trying for less than a year. Smoking and alcohol will DEFINITELY affect your your chances of conceiving, especially on the male side. Plus if girlfriend got pregnant, she would have to go through the stress of giving up then when shes feeling emotional etc. So she should def try and stop soon!

It can take up to a year or more for a healthy couple to concieve.

But yes smoking seriously affects your fertility, can make men impotent and will harm the baby once youre pregnant. both of you need to quit now. Eating healthier and not drinking will help too. also a pregnant woman should NEVER drink alcohol.

it took over a year for me to become pregnant, if your girlfriend was on the pill that can take up to 2 years for the body to readjust and get back to normal, try not to put all your efforts into making a baby, the reason she is not falling may also be because she is worrying to much about it, i would say go to see the doc but they don't tend to do anything until its been over a year.. good luck and have lots of fun trying ;)

the average couple is about six months, the best time is after her menstrual cycle, go to your gp he will say cut down on your smoking and eat healthier, but me and my husband, drink smoke and eat crap and it only took us a month to conceive, everybody is different so chil out and try not to worry
