I presume the second word should be 'method'?

It is a way of experimentally testing hypotheses so as to produce an evidential result. In other words, if you feel that something might be true, you develop a method of testing it experimentally, ensuring that you minimise the possibility of obtaining false results.

Method....

The scientific method, in theory, consists of recognizing patterns that can be explained in a certain way (a hypothesis); followed by experiments that demonstrate whether the effect in question is in fact caused or explained by the effect in question; followed by analysis of the experimental data to assure its validity.

In practice it's not as clean as that, because step 1 is a creative process, and step 2 is subject to the influence of other, unaccounted factors; and step 3 can be fouled by existing agendas and beliefs.

The scientific method is a body of techniques used for inquiry. Specifically, it is used to investigate phenomena and to acquire new knowledge, as well as for correcting and connecting previous knowledge. It works by gathering observable, empirical, measurable evidence, and then subjecting this evidence to the principles of logic and reasoning.
