This is a question probably many folks would like to know the answer from an expert. We lost power due to an ice storm and I have a friend and she has firewood for her fireplace. We know about the termite issue but if one does store firewood outside,
how close to the house is safe without getting the dreaded termites???

DON'T KEEP FIREWOOD WITHIN 40 TO 50 FEET OF HOUSE.
TERMITES WILL FOR SURE GET TO THAT WOOD AND INTO YOUR HOME..

STACK FIREWOOD ON A PLATFORM OFF THE GROUND.
ALSO TREAT/SPRAY FOR INSECTS AND SOME FORM OF TERMITE TREATMENT (STORE STUFF REALLY DOES NOT WORK MUCH BUT BETTER THAN NOTH)

DON'T KEEP WOOD STACKED INSIDE HOME..
USE WHEELBARROW IF NEED BE.

I am sure that the info the other people gave would be adequate. You may also want to consider where you live to help you determine your termite risk. We stored firewood in our garage (attached to house) for a few years before we moved it outside. We never had a problem with termites, but that is probably because termites are relatively uncommon in Massachusetts. If you don't have much of a risk of termites then you can put the wood wherever you want.

To be REALLY safe, stack firewood at least 20 feet from the house. However, six feet or more is fine in most cases. Treat the ground between the woodpile and house occasionally to minimize the chance of insects crawling from the woodpile to the house.

Don't forget about mice and spiders. Try to keep it covered,a tarp is a good idea. I have a pile about 40 feet away, and a smaller pile
that i will use within a few days closer to the house.

Yeah, further away is better. Insects, snakes, and especially termites.

I keep it atleast 10 feet away. It would be best to store it away from the house and just bring loads up to the house when you plan to burn it within a week or so.
