it is iehter the IPC needing rebuilt or the ignition key switch is is bad, or the key if it has a chip in it

we have a 98 olds achieva and it would die a split second after stsrting up, it has 80k miles on it, we tried a new ign lock switch because the dealer said that was what was wrong, it worked for about a week, i took tje instrument cluster panel out(IPC and sent it to southern electronics in virginia and had them rebuild it, they said that was why the car was doing this and now it starts right up everytime like a new car

i would call them and talk to them

do a google search

the dealers are not very god at this stuff,

also try leaving the key in the on position for 10 minutes and then turn off for three seconds and then start it

if the security light is ever on then it should be on soldi and not blinking

if its bliniing then you have to reset it with the above method

if it still dies when you try to start it then you need a new ign lock or IPc needs rebuilt

it is a VERY common problem on the 90's GM cars, lots of different makes and models

get a hold of me if oyu need further info

good luck

The security light is telling you there is a malfunction in the system. The way this system works is the vehicle's computer has to see the rotation of the ignition lock and the computer is not seeing this in your instance.
This system has a magnetic field in the ignition housing as it relates to the lock. If the lock is forced from the housing the field is broken and the engine will not start.
What I have seen to be a common problem over time is that ignition lock lubricatant eventually sprays on the outside of the lock into the housing eventually making it so the vehicle's computer can not see you rotating the ignition to ON. The correction would be; have a locksmith remove the ignition lock and clean the body of the lock and inside the housing. Reinstall and that seems to fix the problem in many cases.

If this is not the problem, you will need to take it into the dealer to scan for PCM codes. If the dealer says they still can't fix it then ask them for a print out of the PCM codes and post them to me.

I dont belive they cant fix it....maybe they want you to buy another car from them, especially now at the end of the year when they are trying to meet quota...the other poster is right about the codes, send them to him.

Also, something like that happened with my 1995 Chevy Lumina, it turned out to be the chip on the key. New key $35

go to a local stereo shop and ask for a gm vats override kit or module (Vehicle Anti-Theft System ) have them install it if you need it

check out this web site first it will explain to you what the gm vats is and might help you to fix it yourself.
