I hope not, so all the people running stolen XP are stuck, hopefully (but not likely) after buying an upgrade version of Vista.

Not a good move at all.

But to answer your question, if/when you try upgrading with a legal version of Vista, you will most likely have problems in the Validation process with Microsoft.

Although, IF you are currently getting all of the Microsoft Updates such as Service Packs, etc. then you MAY not have an issue.

Worst case is you might have to buy an old copy of Win98, ME, XP from someone to properly run the Vista upgrade. Usually, during the upgrade process, an upgrade will ask for the legal copy of the Windows disk that you are upgrading from.

Microsoft OS software is very sophisticated these days, so you may have some major headaches going down the path you have chosen.

No, you're completely SOL. How dumb do you have to be to think you can upgrade an illegally obtained OS with a legal version? Don't you think they're gonna check that first?

you can using a pirated vista which i have seen around already.
but why upgrade, just buy the real one and clean install but afetr you have backed up your valuable data.

Vista is lame - Linux is far better.
