I have always heard that you should, the filter causes the cold water from the top to go down to the bottom and if where you live gets cold enough can freeze the whole pond and can crack the plastic on the filter. Just make sure you have a hole in the ice for the gas exchange.

hi ! its recommened you dont! leave the filter running because they need the air. i have a pond my self and its been up and running for ever i have no problems with my fish when its spring time. just clean your filter once in the fall and then again in the spring. you need that filter running also so when its spring you dont get traped gases in your pond which could result in some not so happy fish. if you need further ? email me at jamisskat@bellsouth.net good luck!

you should have told us what part of the country you live in so we would understand what kind of winter you have
I leave the pump and filter in my pond year round
