I'm a fan of early / mid '80s 'New Country' like early Dwight Y., Lyle Lovett, the O'Kanes, Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Nanci Griffith - where should I go now? It's too easy for knowing, self-referential, aren't-we-clever types to make 'Alt-country', without catching the power of Country's roots.

If you haven't cecked out the following already, try these - Big Star and Gram Parsons/ The Flying Burrito Brothers. Not traditional country by any stretch of the imagination, but still darn good.

I agree with you. It seems that some of these Alt country groups are "noncommittal country." I wonder if these artists chose a country as a motif because soft pop/rock music no longer has a stong audience.
