It could be your mattress maybe time for a new one, or maybe it needs to be turned to the other side, your supposed turn it every 3 months. but not a lot of people do these.

You could have done something strenous yesterday. Carrying groceries upstairs did it to me once. It's kind of like, when you're in a car accident, it always hurts worse the day after.
A second suggestion, maybe you DID sleep in a weird position, I mean you were asleep afterall.
Try taking some motrin, or tylenol and see if you don't feel better later today or tomorrow.

Stress? Maybe you need a new matress! Maybe you don't really know (while you're sleeping) what kind of a position you are sleeping in!

could be stress related. Sometimes when we're stressed our bodies tense up even without us noticing any changes, but then we feel like you do..sore. But to be on the safe-side talk to your doctor.

Happens to all of us, especially as we get older.
Lack of exercise can cause it too. Moderate exercise is the best.
Certain inflammatory substances build up in our sleep, as well (that's why we are puffy in the morning) and they may be irritating your joints.

I have the same problem from time to time. Just stretch really good and take a hot shower.
