Astronomers only theorize about about whether or not the universe will expand forever. Currently there is a buzz over dark matter, the answer to which may shed more light on how long our universe will keep expanding.

The idea that in order for the universe to expand there must be somewhere for it to expand to is a profound question that cannot be answered other than philosophically. We do not know what, if anything, is beyond the bounds of our universe. Indeed we do not even know the bounds of our universe.
