Wild hamsters have to run around a lot to get food and water. They are programmed for this. Also, when a wild hamster gets scared or nervous, it runs away.
In the cage, they can't go far, but on the wheel they can run the way they are programmed to do. And if anything makes them scared or nervous, they can run on the wheel to feel safe.
This is a good example of how we all have to adapt our natural instincts in civilization. When we get scared or nervous, running away usually doesn't help; we need to find other ways to handle stress and satisfy our instincts. That is why exercise is good physically and mentally.

Who wouldn't use one of those things!!!

If I had one of those in my house, I wouldn't have to go to the gym to run on the treadmill.

Maybe hamsters like the Price is Right and they are spinning the wheel until the $1.00 comes up but with their small brains, they don't realize that there are no numbers on the wheel.
