posh parts of London are given titles like yuppies and have 4X4 called Chelsea tractors when where we live there are as many people that are well heeled and have four or fives car sitting in the driveway many of which are 4X4. And why are these people never given derogatory titles like those people from the rich suburbs of London.

I can't answer his question as I would have to give him a subjective answer and he is looking for an objective one. Can you oblige please?

Thank you so much.

Hey, calm down...I am asking for my son. He is learning the way of the world with all it's foibles and is doing a project about the distribution of wealth.

So don't get ratty with me.

First of all London is not the centre of the universe many other great cities in Britain have these affluent suburbs. In life there are two types of things of great value, the things money can buy and those it can,t people in pursuit of money have to live where they can earn the most, but this does not stop them aspiring for the beauty of the country side so they buy 4x4s (a car that is designed to get out of muddy fields and resist knocks and bumps of country life,(hence the tractor stigma). People who don,t have money to waste on such notions tend to concentrate on practicalities. If all the people in your area are well of they would not appreciate being called yuppies so no one does. If you had a council estate near by you would find you would hear the word used a lot more. The people on estates are more practically minded and are not scared of speaking out about such frivolities.

I can surely answer your first question re the titles its the place to live to get one but why anyone has to grovel for a title is beyond my comprehension it should cease forthwith and everyone as a British subject should be addressed as MR and stop all this title nonsense once and for all time and the segregation it causes!!!!

Hello, Scotland!
I'm in California, and I can answer this.
Because some people feel better about themselves when they put others down, and they don't care if they themselves are guilty of the same thing they're making fun of.
It's immaturity and it surfaces at all ages.

Sorry to disagree but in my experience it is nothing to do with London. Anyone is liable to be called a yuppie in those circumstances.

I didn't know that it was confined to London - I live in Scotland and we have similar names for similar things.
