Alopecia is not a 'male' problem. Though male pattern baldness strikes about 60% of the men; women too lose their hair for various reasons. The so-called "female pattern baldness" involves a typical pattern of hair loss in women and is caused by hormones, aging, and genetics.

Other types of hair loss in women besides the 'female pattern baldness' mentioned above include "telogen effuvium" (temporary shedding of hair), "breaking of hair" (from styling, twisting, pulling and so forth), Patches of hair loss called "alopecia areata" (typically an immune disorder), hair loss from taking medications, and some skin problems.

Female pattern baldness, while not as prevalent as male pattern baldness is typically permanent and it may be a very devastating problem for the women affected -- who display varying degrees of acceptance.

You are fortunate that you have not encountered women with a problem with baldness thus far but sooner or later you most likely will.

Yes but it is not common. Often very elderly ladies will have very thin hair but actual baldness is rare. Sometimes disease, stress and medical treatments (like chemotherapy for cancer) cause balding.
In some parts of Asia women suffer the loss of body hair as a common problem. In Korea women actually get pubic hair transplants rather than have a bald vulva.

Yes, women can experience a significant thinning of the hair when they age. Sometimes it results in bald spots or hair so thin that the entire scalp can be seen. There's a name for the disease and I've only seen it on older women. It may be hormonal.

The reason men go bald is often down to high levels of testoterone (an androgen or male sex hormone). As women age their levels of oestrogen drop and in conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome there is also an excess of androgens which can cause excess body.facial hair and male pattern baldness. Alopecia is a name for women's baldness and can occur after a hormone changing event such as pregnancy.

Although baldness is a genetic disposition that is generally a male trait women can have alopecia which will cause extensive hair loss. It is not as common as male pattern baldness. Women who have been receiving radiation treatments for cancer also lose their hair.
