The joke in our family is that whenever we go anywhere, we are prepared for anything, even nuclear war. However, news stories continue to tell us about families hitting the road without planning for emergencies, and leaving their common sense behind. Yet, somehow, their essential stupidity is ignored by the media and they are presented as heroes when and if they are finally rescued from their own incompetence. What do you think?

I'm a poor planner. I'll generally have snacks on hand if we take a long trip, maybe a blanket or two and pillows for the kids - but that is more to keep them comfortable and quiet.

I think people in general think they are invincible -- you know - "it'll never happen to me"...

I have to agree that the media shouldn't portray this people as heroes, but they don't have to be cruel either. Maybe offer some tips for the rest of us that don't think to plan ahead. Not everyone will listen, but maybe a couple will. Anything is possible.

Hmmm -- You ask why people are getting into trouble on poorly planned trips -- one word: MAPQUEST. People think they are planning ahead, pull up directions on mapquest, follow them and get totally lost! It's always a crapshoot when you follow mapquest -- is it right this time?!?!

I do hope they find the father of that SF family...

I wouldn't call them stupid. It's still very rare event for people to get lost in snow storm/camping trips...etc if you think about it. And these things do happen to people who are well prepared. I've seen stories about experienced mountaineers getting lost and falling in accidents. I wouldn't call someone stupid for not having house security system and gun and get shot by a bugler. I don't keep emergency supplies in my vehicle, but I don't go driving in mountain pass during heavy snow. There was only one rescent such story this year I recall and I don't remember seeing too many of these really. Plus in rescent story people credited the mom for breast feeding her kids and not exactly hailed as 'hero'. I don't ever recall hearing that exact term and I live in Seattle area where local news give frequent updates on this.

Very few travelers get into this predicament or even expect to. When you buckle up your seat belts you're not looking for an accident.
