We drained the system at the weekend to replace taps . No problems filling it again but although there is hot water in the basin and bath, it is cold in the kitchen sink on ground floor

Some kind of air lock in the system. Try leaving the tap on downstairs and let it run for a long while. If the hot tank is getting filled as the water is drawn off then there is no reason for the lack of hot water. The hot taps downstairs come from the same supply. Could you by chance have reconnected the hot tap to the cold supply. Run what was the cold tap and see if that runs warm.
Best of luck and have a great Christmas.

You have an airlock in the hot water pipe to this hot tap. If you can manage it, connect a hose pipe to the hot tap, and the other end to the cold tap. Next, open the hot tap first, then the cold tap. Let the cold water run for about 30 seconds, then turn the cold tap off. Remove hose pipe and see if the hot water runs then. If this doesn't work, then leave the hot tap open and eventually the air may find it's way out. Good luck.

If you're getting cold water out of the kitchen hot tap - I'm stumped.

If there's no water from the hot tap, or it's a mixer tap and you're only getting cold water, it's an airlock. You can usually clear this by turning on the hot tap fully, ramming your hand hard against the end of the spout and turning on the cold tap. This forces cold water back up the hot pipe and clears the airlock. If you've got separate taps, you need to connect the two together with a short length of hose.

hmm tricky one

have you tried both taps to make sure you didnt connect hot to cold by accident? did you turn off any valves? retrace your steps of the weekend to see if you have overlooked something - if all else fails, connect a hose to the hot & cold kitchen sink and turn both taps on, this will push any airlocks back into the hot water tank. ONLY do this if you have a hot water tank and not a combination boiler

I would suggest that in your airing cupboard where your hot water cylinder is situated you have left one of the gate valves closed, these are the valves around your hot tank with the red round handles on them, they may even be near your cold water storage tank in the loft, check they are all fully open anti- clockwise, the one with the tee-bar handle is for cold water only.
P.S. check under your sink also in case you have turned one off there as well.

Yellow pages -

Ring up a plumber.... you might get somewhere

Water doesn't just get cold so there must be a connection problem.
