War communism was the measures that Lenin and the communist party took to keep the army supplied during the civil war. This rationed food, banned private trading, nationalised factories and led to rapid inflation.

Lenin was a revolutionary who led the Russian workers in an up-rising against the rich aristocrats and the Russian Royal Family. There had been civil war because there was little food or shelter or warmth for working people.
He imprisoned and had executed the Royal Family. His politics were that under communism every one would be equal do equal shares of the work and have equal shares of the profit. There was wide spread slaughter and mass starvation.

Following the successful revolution on 25th October 1917 (under old Julian Calendar - now 7th November under Gregorian calendar) Russia was attacked by up to 18 countries - they were the "White" Russians. Due to the necessity of fighting these counter-revolutionaries and occupation of vast tracts of land by these 18 nations, the Communist Government were forced to impose "War Communism" on the population in order to provide sufficient arms, equipment and food for the troops sent to put down the counter-revolution and fight to re-occupy land taken over by these 18 nations.
