I don't believe he is dead at all. He is trying to lure voldemort into the open. His death was staged by professor Snape. I believe that Dumbledore and Snape are working together but they wanted it to look like Snape is really one of the death eaters. Dumbledore is a very powerful wizard and with him out of the picture Voldemort will think he can just come after Harry. I believe that in the next book, Voldemort will make his move and then HArry, Snape and Dumbledore will come together and defeat him.
I can't wait for the next book.

There's every possibility Dumbledore didn't die. Some would say this out of refusal to believe it, but I say it because Rowling is working with magic, and there is a perfectly logical explanation. If you take into account that the killing curse is a very powerful spell that has to be said with deep emotion, then it's possible Snape just said the words, though concentrated on a spell to shoot out a harmless bolt of green light. You know something, someone in Rowling's story needs to come up with a spell to block that killing curse (how one-sided is that?), but since no one in this Muggle world knows anything about creating a spell, we can't know how to do so.
Oh, wow. I just read a previous answer which mentioned Fawkes might be Dumbledore's Horcrux. So who did Dumbledore kill to split his soul? It's possible, but something tells me Rowling's view of Dumbledore is a kind old Santa Claus type of guy.

Yes Dumbledore is dead. JKR said so herself in a book interview with 2 other authors who were answering questions.
However, I know Dumbledore will never truly be dead because of the bowl that holds memories (can't think of the name) and he will be one of the portraits on the wall that can talk and such. Besides it is a magical world and Dumbedore is a power wizard so he could help Harry in some ways but never like before.

JKR had to get Dumbledore out of the way in time for the last big confrontation with you-know-who, because a pattern was emerging in which he always stepped in at the last moment to provide Harry with the means of victory. As long as he was around, it was difficult to accept that Harry could ever really be jeopardy. I don't know if he is gone for good, there was something very contrived about that scene with Snape, as if Dumbledore had set it up. But for dramatic tension, Harry has to believe he is on his own for the big showdown!

yes, dumbledore is dead! he fell off a really high tower! besides, we see his body... and if you go onto JKRs website she will tell you so (+ i think she's said so in interviews). most importantly, he's got a portrait. hopefully he'll still talk to harry through the protrait though...
i'd also like to point out that it kinda wrecks characters dying and everybody being really upset and everything if you then bring them back to life later. also kinda fantastical. if people are dead then they should stay dead!
ps it also builds up dramatic tension cos our poor li'l hero is all alone now with nobody to protect him. aw... dumbledore's death also made harry realise that he's the one that's gotta do something and he can't just sit back and let voldemort take over.

If you want to read some really interesting ideas on the subject, then go to
http://www.dumbledoreisnotdead.com
The guy must have way too much time on his hands, but he's got some great ideas and uses examples/evidence from the books. Reading the site made me go back and read several of the books over. He's even still on the fence as to whether or not D is dead. He does suggest that Fawkes might be D's horcrux.

You'll have to wait until 7th July 2007 to really find out.
With the new book, and the 5th film coming out on 13th July, it's going to be a very Harry Potter summer!

No-I don't think he is dead. I think he will return-unbeknownst to Harry at first-but Harry may be aware of his presence. (Think Obi Wan Kenobi) Snape and Dumbledore have laid this trap for Voldemort-who will be thinking Snape is on his side and his nemesis is dead-thus making it easy to get to Harry-when he makes his move,Voldemort will die.

I think he probably is dead. Although, I hope that he isn't and that it was all a set up to get Voldemort to think that he's dead. I guess that we will have to wait for the final book to find out for sure.

I think Rowling means to kill him forever. It builds up a lot of dramatic tension to leave the hero alone. Personally I missed him but perhaps it may be a chance for Harry to be independent, no one he can cling on now.
