Actually, a real tree can be more friendly if you're doing it right. You can get a tree that is "potted" with the roots ready to go. After you celebrate, you can plant it in your yard.

If you're just throwing the tree away after the season though, then get a fake tree. You can use these year after year, and are much more environmentally friendly than just throwing one away every year.

When considering recyclables it may be a draw, especially when considering a fake tree may last for decades. If, however, one can afford a tree a year, then a live one, especially from an organic grower is the way to go. Even better if someone gets a live one and plants it in their own garden or donates it.

I would suggest a real tree. A fake one still harms the environment because its plastic and Never decomposes. Also the manufacturing process emits many harmful gasses.

A real one can be re-potted and kept for following years. Im still using a real christmas tree that i bought 3 years ago.

Plus real trees smell nice when you have them in your living room!

A real live tree. After Christmas, plant it in the garden. When it gets too big to pot up for Christmas, buy a new one. After about 80 years, you'll live in a forest.

fake...it doesnt involve the cutting down of a tree and its used for years and years before you need to replace it. I do like real trees, but I go with an artificial anyway.
