Alfred Bester, author of "The Stars My Destination" which, by the way, is an awesome book. well worth the $12 or $14.
Kurt Vonnegut's (who really isnt exactly a Sci-Fi writer) "The Sirens of Titan," which is one of my favorite books.
You also can't go wrong with Frank Herbert, who wrote the "Dune" series.
Douglas Adams is the master dry Sci-Fi humor in my opinion, though i dont know that there are that many sci-fi comedy writers.
Also, the only real difference between Sci-Fi and fantasy is that the extraordinary is explained by science in Sci-Fi and by the mystical or magical in Fantasy. Example- Zombies that arise by an ancient voodoo curse would be fantasy, while Zombies that arise from nuclear waste would be Sci-Fi.

Ok, so I just answered your question re favorite fantasy author... I confess the lines blur a bit for me between these 2 categories sometimes... I included Douglas Adams in the other list- but likely he belongs here... Although there was a lot that I really didn't agree with Adams on, he was an excellent writer (where he got all that stuff- translation fish in your ear, tea in the clouds, restaurant at the end of the universe- isn't that where Elvis was?)- fantastic! He also, always managed to make his point. Anyway, he gets my vote on this one.

Orson Scott Card, Ray Bradbury, and Jullian May. For different reasons, sci-fi or fantasy. I also agree on L. Ron Hubbard.

Arthur C. Clarke.
He is a revolutionary thinker, even before it was fashionable.
