It strengthens the security of your PC and fixes several bugs, that allows several Worms to infect your PC without your knowledge or interaction (you just have to connect to the internet to get infected, or be in the same network with an infected PC).
It helps with automatically downloading critical updates. With the SP2 security center you can see in one place, where your PC is not protected.
With SP2 comes a better version of the Windows XP Firewall.
Also, connecting to a Wireless Network is more simplified with Service Pack 2.
Furthermore, support for XP's with only SP1 and lower is running out. Microsoft will only support Windows XP with SP2 installed.

I think there are many advantages to SP 2. First and foremost, a built in firewall that is a very efficient system and takes up very little processing power. Other than that, there are a number of extra drivers and support software systems that will allow more up to date hardware to be in the computer itself, as well as closing certain windows loopholes (called buffer overrun vulnerabilities) to some of the worst virusses. I would highly recommend getting service pack 2, especially if you have the computer networked, as it is more secure, safe, and encompassing.

It is required for most the newer updates. It does provide some increased security and improvements in the area of security center and wireless networking. If you are running an older system, or any system ALWAYS backup your important data before upgrading in case there are any complications.

All the updates are available and you don't have to keep on downloading them from the internet. It contains all patches as well as security patches. You can download most of all the updates of Win Xp that require you to have SP2 installed.
