Snape hates Harry because he was a mortal enemy of Harry's father, James.
The pair hated each other when they were at Hogwarts together. James hated Snape because he was into the dark arts and constantly picked on him, casting spells to make him miserable. Snape did the same back, to get even.
I also think Snape was a little in love with Lily, Harry's mum, and was jealous when James became her boyfriend.
As for Harry himself, well he looks like James and is therefore a constant reminder to Snape about how much he hated James Potter.
James, you might remember, lured Snape into an underground tunnel where a werewolf was - and could have got him killed. He wasn't, as James then saved him - but that is another reason why Snape hates both James and Harry.

Snape hates Harry because of his dad,James.Apparently Snape had been the laughing stock of the school just because James liked to impress Lily by making fun of Snape and suspending him in the air.Snape is a death-eater.This was mentioned in the 6th book.Snape betrayed Dumbledore by saying he would be a spy for him when he was actually only pretending to do so.He was actually spying on Dumbledore for Voldemort.

In response to above posters... we THINK at the end of the 6th book that Snape is still a follower of Voldemort. As the book ends, it APPEARS to be so. But I, for one, do not want to make the assumption that it is true. We don't know for absolute sure, and it might all turn around in the last book. And let's hope it does! I'm still holding on for Snape being a good guy.

Snape used to be a Death Eater or might still be. He was also enemies with Harry's dad, James, when they were studying together because james would pick on him for nothing and nearly got him killed during one of his pranks. There is also a possibility that Snape might have had a crush on Harry's mother,Lily. She was the only one who stood up for him when James and gang where bullying him.

Whether Snape is a Death Eater and supporter of Voldemort or not is still debatable. Yes, I know he killed Dumbledore in the 6th book, but for some reason I still believe there's much more beyond Dumbledore's death and Snape's actions. Until the 7th book is released I will keep believing that Snape is innocent.

But I think that Snape's hate for Harry is not connected to his position in the wizarding war. His hate for Harry is much more personal than that and I think it would have existed even in the absence of Snape's role as a Death Eater.

I think the relationship between Harry and Snape is truly interesting. For some reason, it fascinates me; maybe because I see it as a subject that is so large and deep that it could be thoroughly analyzed.

Now to be more specific and answer your question, I think the main reason Snape hates Harry is Harry's dad, James. Like the previous answerers suggested, James and Snape hated each other when they were Hogwarts students. I think we can all agree that James' hate for Snape was not as motivated as Snape's hate for James was. Let's face it, James was the one who always picked on Snape, mostly for no solid reasons, and always made sure he embarassed and annoyed him as much as possible. James was indeed a bully, he was smug and even mean; even Harry was disturbed to find out how his father behaved in his Hogwarts years. Plus, it is obvious Snape had a bit of a crush on Lily and became jealous when James got together with her. So I'd say Snape had all the reasons to hate James. So he sees Harry as an extension of his father. Snape's hate for James was so intense that it extended to the whole family and to everything that James meant, including the Gryffindor House. This hate was so intense that Snape saw in Harry the perfect opportunity to take revenge for all the harm James caused to him. He didn't bother to get to know Harry because he was sure he was a perfect copy of his father and he was sure he was entitled to hate him. Actually, Snape doesn't see Harry as an individual being. He sees him as an extension of his father, that's why he can't judge him as an individual being.

This mystery is still unrevealed whether Snape supports Voldemort or Dumbledore(though he is dead now). So,hatrid because of Snape being a death eater is not very convincing, to the point that he hates Harry though it holds true when talked about James, as he ie.Snape himself was involved in the plan of killing James.
James and Snape both disliked each other.
James was better than Snape in everything in his teen days in terms of popularity which anyone would wish for and is a reason enough for hatrid.
So, I feel, snape has hatrid for Harry because he hated James for he was jealous of him, and as you too mention that Harry looks more of like his father, anyone who had seen James would be reminded of him on seeing Harry.

If you had read the sixth book you would see that he still is a supporter of Voldemort. But I believe that the previous answers were right as to why he hated Harry. I sometimes wonder if that is why Voldemort chose to go after Harry. In the fifth book, Dumbledore makes the interesting point that both Harry and Neville were born in the same month and thus both qualified to fulfill the prophecy. But I would be willing to bet that Voldemort never heard about Neville as it was Snape who tipped him off about the prophecy in the first place.

He hates him because he was a former death eater and the fact that Snape and Harry's father were rivals back when they were students and Harry's father James always got the best of Snape, so Snape now takes it out on his rival's son (Harry)

Hope this helped :)

Easy. Snape has never been loyal to the Dark Lord. It OotP, Snape's Worst Memory (which is, by the way, one of my favorite scenes in the entire series), don't you wonder WHY it was his worst memory? Obviously, Snivelly has been harassed by the Marauders on a regular basis, so mooning the whole school can't be it. It was the fact that Lily called him Snivellus before she left. He was porbably just trying to look tough or something when he called her a Mudblood. Surprise, surprise, Snape loved Lily Evans! Whenever he looks at Harry, he sees James. When he looks at his eyes, he sees Lily. Snape is jealous of James. He dreamt that instead of Harry, it would be a greasy-haired, hook-nosed, red-headed, green-eyed little kid. Very simple.

Snape's hatred for Harry stems back to when Snape himself was a student at Hogwarts. He was in the same year as Lily and James, Harry's parents, and their friends, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew. James offered played the fool and Snape was the 'victim' of numerous planks. Because James is dead, Snape's hatred can only be directed to Harry.
