I think it's political correctness gone mad, for fear of offending any non-Christians (i.e. losing votes) let's not put any christmas decorations up! What's more offensive is for it to be suggested that non-christians can't cope with a few trees and twinkly lights! The Indian community in Derby put up their lights for Diwali and then leave them up throughout christmas too, which I think is far more conducive to good relations between different cultures than the PC brigade creating areas of tension that I don't feel truly exist - I hope so anyway - Happy Christmas to one and all, let's spread some festive cheer, God knows the world needs it!

Im not really "Christian" but we put up decorations and have a tree etc, there are many non-christians who do the same. Its a lie that these people are offended, its a celebration yes-of the christian faith, but we celebrate this time of year as "goodwill to all men" etc so the christian values are followed all the same.
I think its a shame that whoever made this stupid suggestion wants to increase the conflict that already exists, it was an un-wise thing and now i bet people will go OTT even more on the decorations!

I used to teach in a faith school. There were on roll children of many faiths by virtue of the location. Many parents chose to send their children there rather than to the amoral and atheistic state schools.
All the children enjoyed celebrating Christmas, they wanted to take part in the Religious Celebrations as well.
Children of non Christian faiths were in the front when it came to the switching on of the Christmas lights in the Town.
and if the decorations in school went up late there was an outcry.... in case they had been forgotten .
They also enjoyed receiving Christmas cards and presents even though is was not part of their Religion!!
PS We enjoyed the hospitality extended to us by the Seihks when they paraded through the Town showering everyone with sweets because it was Guru Nanak's Birthday.

I find it interesting that no-one is concerned if a "minority" religion puts up decorations. Surely one would assume that the "majority" religion would be able to put up decorations whenever it wants simply by the fact that it is the "majority" religion.
I would say that you would seldom find any religion complaining about another religion putting up decorations. Most of the complaints come from the so called "atheists". Which is interesting as if they truly do not believe in any god be it "majority" or "minority", why are they then concerned if those deluded religious folks want to spend time and money putting up decorations.
I.M.H.O. they are uncomfortable with the obvious religious decorations which start to raise questions within their own lives as to whether or not god exists, and if so what should they be doing about it. And it is this which causes them to flare up and claim that other religions are being oppressed by other decorations.

I say no and you'll never, ever find anyone who says yes. Its madness, and this really does show how pc some people are. Also, Christmas lights have no religious connotations associated with them, they just further the fact that Christmas is a secular holiday for the most part and we can all celebrate it how we wish, be that going to church, a pub lunch or a holiday.

I am right in saying this is a Christian/ Church of England country? I Think not having them up is only going to cause more problems, People are going to start hating other religions i.e Muslim and Islam because they feel they have ruined Christmas.. but when its really the government that scared of offending them!

No I don't object to Christmas decorations, were I live we have decorations for Eid and no one objects to those, there are lots of Asian families in our town who celebrate both Eid and the Christian Christmas, our Christmas is celebrated by them for the sake of their children, how rotten would it be to stop putting decorations up and disappointing the children, I honestly think the only people who object to it are the PC brigade themselves, they are the biggest set of whingers and the biggest trouble makers we have in this country, its about time we got rid of them, we don't need them and their petty behaviour.

I am Jewish and Xmas decorations or the lovely carols never offended me, I like them a lot. It has always made me happy and in a good mood as a matter of factm, when I was a small child of 7, I was chosen at my school which was public to put the bab yesus in his bed in a manger scene display. I was so overwhelmed it made me cry. Shame on anyone who protests Xmas lights or our Hanukah Menorah. Go for it

so so stupid, if anyone IS offended then go to country where they dont celebrate it! this britain, most of celebrate it and tuff if you dont! you know jehovas dont celebrate it but you dont here them going on about it (well i know a few and they have never said it offends them), and the children of theirs my daughters school are not offened either! also annoys me that when it was diwali, my 6 year old daughter had to learn about it, but when it comes to her christmas play, she isnt allowed to do the traditional one in case it does offend someone, so next year diwali will be offending me, and i will be letting the school know!!!

This is so stupid. If I was offended by a certain religion, should I ask them to tear down their church so it wouldn't offend me while I drive to work? Can I ask them to take down all religious symbols??? This is so overboard! It infuriates me beyond belief.
