OK, I'm an old fart who's gone back to college, from both need and desire, after far too many years! In most courses, a couple of mis-spelled words and punctuation errors can drop your grade a level. I just pity the poor idiots who can't even bother using the spell-check tool which is provided. Isn't it just common courtesy and good communications skills to spell correctly for your reading audience? Or is that too going by the wayside LIKE common courtesy, ethics, etc.

Sorry, I should have added a disclaimer about those using English as a second language: You can usually discern those posters, and I am not directing my question to or about them. I admire those who can communicate even at the basic level in other languages - WITHOUT boasting of the fact.

There are so many different types of people on the network. I've been here just a short time but can already tell how many teens use this site.

There are apparently many people from other countries using this service as well.

As I become more acquanited with the types of questions and answers, I can already see a large amount of frivilousness in both areas. I don't believe Yahoo Answers is an Expert System. It feels like a hangout of sorts..

At least, that's my assessement at this stage.

Different combinations. I, not unlike yourself, have gone back to institutions of higher learning after maturing somewhat. Obviously the 'spell check' option doesn't get used often and it's so easy and convenient! Some don't care, some don't double check syntax or 'quote' it aloud, etc.
The multi-lingual persons, as well as the rest that are posting questions or giving answers should learn proper English and all should learn or already know which words start with capitol letters, sentences that end with periods, exclamation marks, question marks, etc.
To the people who read this, put a little brain power into it. It isn't hard to do.

Most of the time it is fumbling fingers. Most people are not proficient typists and very few these days are effective spellers. If it sounds right the it looks "write" as they say. With the advent of the visual image we have become a generation of listeners and not readers

Another factor is that a lot of the users of Yahoo Answers spend a lot of time Instant Messaging each day, and IM is a code unto itself.

You should also consider the fact that not everybody using this forum has English as their first language. I speak three languages, how many do you speak, college boy?
