unplug the machine, plug it in the slot, maybe install the driver if it needs it, and run the network wizard ....

shut down your system, open up your computer and stick the nic on an available pci slot if you are using a pci nic. turn it back on and hopefully your computer will autoinstall the nic. go to network settings and then tcp/ip properties. you can use and ip you want but it has to be different on the other computer. example configs.
ip 10.12.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
default 10.12.0.1
for computer 1
and for computer 2

ip 10.12.0.3
subnet 255.255.255.0
default 10.12.0.1

you need a crossover cable to connect the two computers.
