Depends upon which manifold you're talking about. All cars have at least 2 -- intake and exhaust. Others may have more -- water and fuel just to name a couple. There may also be one or more manifolds on the brake system as well.

The most common problem with any manifold is leaks.

Exhaust or Intake?

Manifolds are collections of pipes or ducts or vents. The intake manifold takes in the air through one opening, then splits into separate pipes that go to each cylinder. The exhaust manifold takes the pipes from the exhaust from each cylinder and put them together into one pipe to the exhaust.

If it is an intake leak, the engine will usually rev up, stumble, hunt at idle, miss or otherwise not work so good.
If it's an exhaust leak, it will usually not affect how the engine runs too much, but will be noisy and sometimes you will get exhaust smell in the car...which is not a good thing.

To find an intake leak, there are a couple common methods. Using a propane torch, with the gas on low and NOT burning...the nozzle is moved around the intake manifold seals/joints/fittings...if the engine revs up, you have a manifold leak. Another way is to use WD-40 or a similar product to spray around the manifold seals...when the WD-40 temporarily seals the leak, the engine will sound different.
Another way to find a leak, which works with intake or exhaust, is to take a flexible tube...stick one end to your ear, and move the other end around the suspected leak...when you find it, you will hear it.

depends on if it's exhaust or intake manifold rarely do intakes "go bad" most of the time it is the gasket caused by not maintaining the coolant properly they can leak coolant externally,or internally into the oil or cylinders and burn it they also can leak vacuum and cause the car to run poorly or get bad fuel mileage exhaust-manifolds do sometimes crack and make noise hope this helped
